Descendants of Rufus Clay Crumley
Rufus Clay CRUMLEY b. 6 Jan 1847, Cocke County, TN, m. (1) Priscilla Fox, d. Maury County, TN, m. (2) 05 Mar 1873, in Cocke County, TN, Laura Ann HOLT, b. 22 May 1853, (daughter of Adam (Add) HOLT and Mary Elizabeth DAWSON) d. 11 Apr 1937, buried: Old Ethridge Cemetery, Ethridge, TN. Rufus died 13 Jun 1917, Ethridge, TN, buried: Old Ethridge Cemetery, Ethridge, TN. Census info shows Rufus was born in 1847, not 1844. Tombstone says 1844. Rufus' Civil War records also indicate 1847. Death Certificate 108, File 12, Register 12, Lawrence Co., TN, filed June 14, 1917. In a deed dated Sep 04 1916, Rufus is listed as Rufus Clay Crumley.
Listed in his father's household in the census of 1850 and 1860. He is shown to have enlisted with his brother John at Newport, TN, Cocke County, on Jan 31 1865. He is shown to be age 18 and a farmer. His eyes were blue, complexion fair, and he was 5'11" tall. He was mustered into service at Knoxville, Tennessee on Mar 02 1865 in Co. F, 4th Reg., TN Infantry, as a private. He is shown on duty in the period Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr, May 1865. He was on the muster out roll at Nashville, TN Aug 02 1865. He drew pay due from enrollment: Clothing $31.87 and $66.66 in pay. He signed with a mark.
Rufus Crumley died in Ethridge, Tennessee on June 13, 1917. He had fallen asleep with his feet propped up in front of the fire. His feet burned and developed Gangrene. This was in the home he had purchased on September 4, 1916. On December 30, 1918, Laura traded the Ethridge home for the old farm in Giles County and moved back to the old home place.
From Don Gowen: Rufus Crumley and his brothers grew up in Cocke County, TN, as sons of a farmer. When the region entered the Civil War in 1861, Rufus was age 14 and too young to become a part of the conflict. East Tennessee loyalties were divided with many citizens favoring the Union position, as well as others favoring the Confederate cause. This division cut across family lines as well. The Cocke County Crumleys became Union soldiers, while their cousins to the northeast in Greene, Sullivan and Washington counties fought with the Confederacy.
As the battles swept back and forth across the mountains, Jesse Crumley and his sons watched the conflict develop. On a cold Winter day, Jan 26, 1865, John Crumley, Rufus' older brother went into Newport, Tennessee and was enlisted in the Union Army. He was a young strapling farmer who stood 5'9" tall, eyes were dark, and complexion dark.
Five days later, and probably influenced by his brother's decision, young Rufus Crumley (age 18, born 1847) also entered Newport and enlisted in the Union Army. His army records indicate the enlistment was for one year. He was taller than his brother, standing 5'11" with blue eyes, fair hair and fair complexion.
On March 2, 1865, both John and Rufus were mustered into service at Knoxville, Tennessee and were assigned to the 4th Tennessee Volunteer Infantry Regiment as privates. This regiment had previously been assigned to the Morristown area (a few miles from the Crumley home) on February 5, 1865 and saw service along the French Broad River in Cocke County. On February 5, 1865, the regiment was again at Morristown (Moser's Mill).
In preparation for Major General Stoneman's expedition into western Virginia and North Carolina, General Tillson concentrated the lst Brigade at Morristown and on March 22, arrived at Roane's Creek. He stationed the 4th Tennessee, with 544 men, at Taylorsille, Tennessee, to hold the passes near there.
The Company Muster Roll for Company F, 4th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry, indicates Rufus Crumley present for duty for the following periods: January and February, 1865 - Present; March and April, 1865 - Present; May and June, 1865 - Present.
John Crumley, Rufus' brother, was assigned to the same company (Company F) and was noted as AWOL on the roll call of April 17, 1864. (?) He was later listed as a deserter. However, other company records indicate he rejoined the unit at Strawberry Plains (north of Knoxville) in March 1865. The unit was at Jonesboro, Tennessee, on April 20 and May 18, 1865.
Unit records indicate both Rufus and John Crumley were mustered out of service on August 2, 1865, at Nashville, Tennessee. At the time, Rufus had been paid since enrollment. Records indicate he was paid $66.66 of which $31.87 was due the U. S. Army for his clothing account.
Priscilla: According to Huey Crumley in Missouri and Lynda Crumley in Columbia, TN, Priscilla was full-blooded Cherokee. According to Don Gowen, Priscilla was married to unknown Turner before Rufus and they had one child, believed to be Robert Turner. Don Gowen believes Priscilla is the daughter of White Cloud, a prominent Cherokee. I show her on 1850 census for Cocke County, TN, age 8, living in the household of her father, Absolem Fox. Laura: Marriage date of 1870 is from Maggie Riner Thornton's records, received from her mother Daisy May Crumley. Priscilla's children contested Laura executing Rufus' will and took her to court. There is court transcript in Giles County, TN. I have copy. Rufus' pension papers say he and Laura married Mar 5, 1873.
I. Jesse Alexander Crumley (son of Rufus Clay CRUMLEY and Priscilla Fox) b. 3 Dec 1869, Cocke County, TN, m. (1) 06 Aug 1889, in Giles County, TN, Louisa E. Pilkinton, b. Abt. 1873, (daughter of Jefferson Cahal Pilkinton and Mary Ann Renfro) m. (2) 26 Jul 1905, Annie Virginia (Jennie) Woodard, b. 13 Sep 1880, Maury County, TN, (daughter of John J. Woodard and Susan Tarecy Matilda Ann Pilkinton) d. 15 May 1971, buried: East Hill Cemetery, Giles County, TN. Jesse died 29 Jul 1921, buried: Liberty Hill Cemetery, Ethridge, TN. There is also an 8" x 16" marker with no dates that says "Alick C. Crumley" lying immediately next to Alex's stone. This is the homemade marker of their baby who was stillborn 3 months after Alex died. See further notes.
Notes from Don Gowen: Upon their marriage, Alex and Annie Virginia (Jennie) set up housekeeping at Wales Station, TN, Giles County, where Alex continued farming.
In 1910, the family moved to Veto, AL, Limestone County on the TN/AL line, at the place where the old railroad depot stood beside the tracks. Alex worked on the railroad (until discharged for palsy) and farmed.
At Veto, Alex and Jennie took in a boarder, the local school teacher named Mary Vinson. Ms. Vinson stayed with the family until school was out in 1911, when she decided to return to her home. Alex, it seems, had developed a fondness for Ms. Vinson; and while Jennie was across the field visiting the Mayfields, Alex carried Ms. Vinson to the train station. He told his son Morgan that if he was not back by the time the 5 o'clock train whistle blew, he wouldn't be back; and off into the sunset he rode with Ms. Vinson at his side.
Jennie moved back to TN, where Charles Allen Crumley was born. She lived by providing housekeeping services for the Risner family at Liberty Hill. This small income was insufficient to support her large family, with a small baby. Mr. Risner was unable to keep up both his family and Jennie's. It is rumored that Hannah Crumley Seaton advised authorities of the family's condition, and the state came and picked up two of the children (Solon and Willie Crumley) for placement for adoption through a home in Nashville, TN. Hannah Seaton took Jesse Crumley, and Cy and Myrtle Goats Adams took Oscar (Bill) Crumley to provide a home. Solon Crumley was adopted out and returned in later years after becoming grown and serving time in the Navy. Willie Crumley was never heard from again.
In 1914, Alex returned to Jennie and they moved back to Wales Station and farmed. The reunion didn't last long, and Alex left again in the same year. He returned in Dec 1916. It is believed he had three children with Mary Vinson.
In 1920, the family moved back to Liberty Hill, Campbellsville area, where Alex and his sons worked the farm of John Morris until his death Jul 29 1921.
The house on Campbellsville Road was a large white frame house, well trimmed with boxwoods around the house and down the drive to the main road. Alex became ill while working the fields, and the fever was to last 6 weeks. He was treated by a Dr. Copeland from the community. The condition was thought to be contagious, and Alex stayed in a hallway of the house on a cot. Ice was ordered and packed around his head and body to bring down the temperature. In the end, Alex had Dr. Harmon from Pulaski summoned, but the condition had taken its toll and he died from Typhoid Fever. At the end, Alex would place the cot under a shade tree where the children would bathe him. On Jul 28 1921, he got up and went to the barn where the boys were bringing in hay from the fields. He always wore blue overalls, blue work shirt and a broad-brimmed black felt hat. The exercise caused pneumonia to set in and he died the next day.
Jennie was pregnant (baby stillborn 3 months later, Alick C. Crumley, buried beside of father in the Liberty Hill Cemetery), and she didn't have the strength to handle the funeral. Alex's sister Hannah Crumley Seaton took charge with the help of Maggie Lee Crumley and a black lady named Laura Cottom. She had the body taken from the home to the Liberty Hill Cemetery in a black hearse pulled by six black horses. Hannah had Alex buried (against his wishes) in a suit, the only one he ever had on. He was married in overalls and a blue shirt, which he wore for his natural life. Jennie could not attend the funeral.
Jennie moved back to Wales Station and continued to keep her family together by milking cows on Will Holt's farm for $15 per month and $25 per month from Alex's estate (controlled by attorney Robert E. Lee from life insurance proceeds on Alex and a government check on William Crumley's death in WWI). Attorney Lee was appointed by Judge J. C. Hannah.
On Sep 24 1924, Jennie married Thomas Jefferson Phelps in Giles County, TN, by W. J. Holt, JP. One child was born to this marriage, Juran Phelps Barnett, on Nov 18 1925. Thomas Phelps and Jennie separated. He went to live in TX with some of his children for a number of years before returning to Pulaski where he died and is buried.
Upon divorce from Thomas Jefferson Phelps, Jennie married John Glasgo. They lived in Columbia, TN, for a number of years and then moved to Pulaski, TN, where Jennie died May 15 1971. She didn't want to be buried beside her first husband because she always felt no one would take care of the Liberty Hill Cemetery.
Louisa: It is believed that Louisa died giving birth, but no confirmation of this has been found. Last recorded evidence found was when she joined Alexander Crumley in a deed to property sold on Jan 01 1901. J. A. Cullins had sold Alexander Crumley 30 acres in Dist. 19, Giles County, TN, on Nov 22 1900. To pay the consideration of $25, Alex paid $10 cash and the #15 balance in kind (he split rails at $1 per hundred and made boards at $.25 per hundred). Died between 1900 and 1910. Annie: Cemetery may be Maplewood. Need to confirm, as I have conflicting info. Jennie also had one child by her sister Alice's widowed husband, Sam Adams, named Maggie Lee Adams, Aug 12 1899. Jennie raised Maggie and her sister's daughter, Lura. Maggie helped Jennie raise the Crumley children later.

During the period 1911-1914, Solon and Willie Crumley were taken from Annie Virginia Crumley and placed for adoption through an adoption home in Nashville, TN. This was during the period that the family was abandoned by Alex Crumley. Annie Virginia Crumley was staying with Newt Risner and his wife (the wife was an invalid) on the Campbellsville Road at Liberty Hill, TN. Times were tough, and Mr. Risner had a large family to support and he could not feed all the children. The older boys were placed with other families to farm, Solon and Willie went to the adoption home, and Annie Virginia kept the smaller children.
Solon was adopted by a family from Petersburg, TN, last name Faulk. At the age of 17 (no contact with the Crumley family), Solon started using the name Cromlee. He enlisted in the Navy in 1926 in order to get off the farm. He always felt the Faulks only adopted to be used for farm labor.
While in the service, Solon located his mother and family and sent his mother a picture of him in uniform. Upon his release from service, he visited his mother and the remaining children at their home. The visit was not good (lasted about two hours). He never forgave his mother for the adoption, stating she should have tried to locate him.
While in Giles County, he engaged a lawyer Lee to assign his rights to insurance proceeds to Christine and Shirley Crumley, payable at their 21st birthday. During the visit, he gave Selma, Christine and Jurann $1.00 each and left. No further contact was made with his mother until his death. It should be noted here that Annie Virginia Crumley was not well schooled. She had engaged the same lawyer Lee to locate Solon, but the lawyer had advised her that he could not locate him.
In his later years, Solon visited with Oscar (Bill) Crumley, Christine (Crumley) Gowen, and Selma (Crumley) Widby.
Nancy: Nancy died of cancer. No children. Ruth: Ruth had a daughter and three sons from a former marriage.
F. William (Willie) Crumley (son of Jesse Alexander Crumley and Annie Virginia (Jennie) Woodard) b. Abt. 1910. See notes on Solon Crumley. Willie was adopted to a family in West Tennessee, name unknown. The adoption home burned with all records four years after the adoption took place. Solon searched for a number of years for Willie but he was never located.

Notes for Shirley Crumley: I also have Shirley's birthdate as 17 Dec 1917. Shirley grew up in a farm environment and was a farmer himself in Giles County around the community of Pigeon Roost. He also worked at the old IC Mines (Pulaski Hwy. and Wales Rd.). While living at Pigeon Roost, he stayed with Selma and Henry Whidby. Shirley served in the Army during WWII in New Guinea and the Philippines, where he learned the trades of masonry and tree trimming. He worked for Roy Turner (1910-1950 Rosehill Cemetery), the first husband of Shirley's wife Alice and father of Ronald Edward Turner, as a tree trimmer. He also worked for Aaron Crumley and wife Mae as a storekeeper in Columbia, TN. He met Alice and they were married Mar 31 1951. They separated, then remarried on Jan 15 1955.
Shirley was known as a quiet and shy individual. He believed in a day's work for a day's pay, and he tried to mind his own business.
Shirley had no children, but Alice's son by her first marriage, Robert Edward Turner, was like Shirley's own son to him. Alice also had two daughters, Alice (Peggy) and Mattie.
J. Due to the size of her family and tough economic conditions of the time, she lived the majority of her childhood with Lizzie and Will Hannah, her mother's sister. Christine was the last child born to Alex and Jennie. She had Typhoid Fever at age 9.

Feb 1884, d. 22 Sep 1949, buried: Old Ethridge Cemetery, Ethridge, TN. Joseph died 1957, buried: Old Ethridge Cemetery, Ethridge, TN. Joe and Haughty were married by J. C. Hannah, JP. Bondsman was Press Crumley. Joe was listed as age 46 in 1920 census. On Rufus' pension papers, they have Joe's birth as 4 Nov 1878, but he was not yet 4 on the 1880 Maury County, TN census, so he had to be born 1876. Hortense: Haughty listed as 33 in 1920 census, so her birth year is probably 1887.
From Maggie Thornton: Aunt Haughty's husband, Uncle Joe, had one of the few cars in the area at that time. Aunt Haughty got wind of him sneaking off to see "a woman" down off the hill from where they lived. He cranked his car one night and headed on out the road. Aunt Haughty and Maggie Riner Thornton were both crack shots with a gun. They ran down over the hill, as he had to go around and down a road to get down the hill. They hid in the bushes and shot his headlights out. As far as Aunt Haughty knew, he never went to see "that woman" again. He also never mentioned the headlights to Aunt Haughty.

Van and Mandy ran a general store at Beach Hill, close to where they are buried. They had no children, but adopted a daughter, Lila Boshears Strange, who married Rod Greenfield. The Greenfields had one child that died in an accident.
Pisgah Ridge Cemetery is located west of Mt. Pleasant, TN, (5 miles) on the Hampshire Pike - Mt. Pleasant Road. The cemetery is beside the Pisgah Methodist Church, which was organized in 1808 by the Rev. John Akin. The tombstone is a single stone and does not reflect the date of death and burial of Mandy. Date of death believed to be about 1962 or 1963.
Note from Betty Thornton - I don't think the above death date is correct. I have always been under the impression that Mandy died before I was born. I was born in 1947. Need further research. Also, on Rufus' pension papers they have birth as 17 Oct 1880, not 1879, but she was on the 1880 census for Maury County as an infant.
